Flour Water Salt & Time is a Whitman’s Sampler of Brad’s poetry. From grief folded dark chocolates, to moon lit vanilla cremes, to love filled cherry cordials, to caramel nut clusters of amphibian dreams, he gives us a taste of his life on the great plains. An urban dweller in a prairie state he takes us from the Loess hills and Ashfall, to his front porch and his neighborhood’s community garden. He touches on his late wife, his family, flowers, frogs, the state he lives in, and the meditative calm of making sourdough.

What others are saying about Flour Water Salt & Time:
"This quiet and deeply felt collection opens with sourdough starter letting time do its work, and this moment of sitting still is repeated throughout, whether it is a man sitting with a banjo on a porch, an eagle standing in furrowed ground, or to 'sit beneath a cloudless sky' in the Loess Hills. We continue this theme with memories of a father sitting at a workbench, or sitting in a car with a daughter, or at a card table with a grandfather. Anderson captures meaning from seated moments, from stillness and reflection, from the opening starter that sits in a jar but transforms to something more, to the full-bodied stillness in the concluding lines of the collection. These poems give a timely reminder to slow down and notice the small, heartfelt interactions unfolding in daily life."
—Kelly Madigan, author of The Edge of Known Things
"In Flour Water Salt & Time, Brad Anderson admires his father’s 'sure hands, his careful skill.' These same attributes are very fitting for this fine collection of poems. This is the song of our neighborhood. Enjoy what Brad lifts up and preserves for us."
—Marjorie Saiser, author of The Track the Whales Make
"Flour Water Salt & Time grounds us in the act of being human: there’s sweetness and salt, grief and humor, local community and the vast universe. The poems 'When The Bleeding Hearts Bloom' and 'Shoot The Moon' seamlessly blend family and memory. In the title poem, Anderson guides us along his meditative flow, the process of feeding and hand-working the sourdough. Then shaping and baking, transforming its earthly ingredients into something that satisfies more than the senses, it’s more like holy communion."
—Twyla M. Hansen, Nebraska State Poet 2013-2018, author of Inventions Of Love
